What is Ecotourism?

Traveling, as I say, is inevitable, so traveling sustainably is necessary. Traveling is known for being hard on our planet especially if you are traveling by plane or road-tripping, which are two of my favorite ways to travel. That is why I have taken it upon myself to learn how to do so in a more sustainable manner and show that it is possible for you to also be a sustainable adventurer!

Ecotourism and traveling sustainable is about the way you travel and has become a vital way to travel to help preserve, conserve, and keep places and our environments thriving. Ecotourism focuses on traveling in a more mindful, sustainable, and respectful way.

Ecotourism is defined as the ‘responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment, sustains the well-being of the local people, and involves interpretation and education (TIES, 2015) (look into this)..

Ecotourism is about uniting conservation efforts by traveling in a more sustainable manner and creating positive impacts for the communities that may be otherwise negatively impacted. The pillars that makes traveling considered as ecotourism are as follows:

THE PILLARS OF ECOTOURISM:

  • Sustainable Management
  • Socioeconomic Impacts
  • Cultural Impacts
  • Environmental Impacts

Ecotourism helps support many countries and creates a more sustainable foundation as well as better economy for those places.

By traveling in a sustainable manner, this means that you should work on minimizing your physical and social impacts on a place, be aware and respectful of the environments, ecosystems, and other cultures of wherever you are visiting, create positive experiences for yourself and the hosts, financially benefit the local community and local businesses, be sensitive to the place you are visiting political, cultural, environmental and social climates, and create a low impact way to travel.

You should be implementing these practices into every trip you take whether it is near to your home or across the globe. By being an eco-traveler, you will positively impact places that may be struggling economically, socially, or dealing with mass environmental destruction. By supporting these places, you can help try to fix these issues and create a better place for other people to visit and live.
